«I Campi» is a collection of 3 CRU of Cabernet Franc that tell the distinct character of 3 individual vineyards. It was born with Campo di Magnacosta in 2011, when the Cabernet Franc vineyards had reached a mature age to be able to precisely express the soil of each CRU. To complete the collection, Campo di Tenaglia and Campo di Camagi arrived in 2014. Campo di Magnacosta is a 1.5 hectare vineyard that grows on deep and well-drained soil of gravel and silt, of alluvial origin, in the lowest part of the estate, at 400 – 450 meters above sea level, where an ancient river has disappeared under the surface. The vines are 30 years old.
THE STORY OF THE YEAR AND THE VINEYARDS The 2022 vintage presented itself as one of the driest in recent years, following the 2021, already arid and difficult. However, the plants, working in memory of the previous year, reduced their activities to conserve energy. The work in the vineyard was meticulous, in particular to manage the leaf wall, a practice also necessary for the future selection of the bunches. During the thinning phase, all the vines were relieved of excessive weight, not so much to seek concentration but to help the plant to bring a few bunches to maturity, given the scarce water resources. The harvest appeared early at first glance, but then slowed down due to the continuous rains: the amount of water normally spread over a few months was concentrated in a few days in September. The September rains refreshed the vintage and were decisive for the organoleptic characteristics of the 2022 Cabernet Franc. Despite the high temperatures and the little summer rain, the plants of Campo di Magnacosta managed to find, thanks to their position on the valley floor, the energy and water resources to bring the few bunches of Cabernet Franc to maturity, but the classic low yields per hectare of our estate dropped further in 2022. We harvested the grapes manually on October 5th.
VINIFICATION The fermentation took place in stainless steel vats. Then the wine aged for 8 months in French barriques and for a further 12 months in cement tanks. 1939 bottles were bottled on March 8th, with the waning moon.
