PRODUCT INFORMATION

Gorgona 2024
Tuscany Coast IGT
"The Tuscan archipelago is an earthly paradise, of which Gorgona is the wildest and most luminescent pearl of Aphrodite. Behind
its apparent stubbornness lies the inexpressible seduction of scents and silences, and a nature that moves with its strength, its
eternal puberty.... And all around, water and salt, reflecting the messages of the sky, tightening the nooses on the sails." (A. Bocelli - 2014)
The Gorgona project was born in August 2012 thanks to the collaboration between Frescobaldi and Gorgona, the only island prison in
Europe. Here, inmates spend the final stretch of their sentences, working in contact with nature to develop
professional skills that facilitate their reintegration into the working and social world. Around a small vineyard, in the heart of an
amphitheater overlooking the sea, a project began. Its goal is to allow inmates to gain hands-on experience
in viticulture, with the collaboration and supervision of Frescobaldi agronomists and oenologists. Today, the
vineyard extends over two hectares, one of which was initially planted and a second one planted in 2015. From this vineyard,
Vermentino and Ansonica grapes are grown, Gorgona, a fruit of the uniqueness of the place, of human labor, and a symbol of hope and freedom.
The Gorgona label aims to be the island's "extraordinary edition," depicting a different aspect of it each year.
With Gorgona2024, we wanted to talk about the 50 butterfly species that have found their ideal habitat here and the
green manure that helps maintain balance naturally, enriching the soil and attracting pollinating insects.
Gorgona is located on ferrous soil. It is a small, two-hectare vineyard, wonderfully exposed to the east and
protected from the winds. Planted in 1999, and subsequently in 2015 and 2018, the Vermentino and
Ansonica varieties have always been the undisputed protagonists of this extraordinary wine. Gorgona embodies the entire
essence of the island.
Climate Trend
The autumn season on Gorgona Island saw abundant rainfall, which began around mid-October
and continued through November. Precipitation continued into the first half of December,
a month with temperatures slightly higher than seasonal averages. The winter of 2024 will be remembered as one
of the warmest in recent years, with average temperatures of 12–15°C and rare cold days. Rainfall did not occur in
January, but resumed in February, a month with numerous rainy days. Budbreak began in the second half of
March for Vermentino, which occurred around March 20th, followed by budbreak for Ansonica,
a later-ripening variety. Early April also saw abundant rainfall, while the second half of the month
recorded a drop in temperatures, which slowed vine development. June, characterized by
cool days and temperatures slightly below seasonal averages, served as a prelude to the months of July and August,
characterized by high temperatures, but always mitigated by the presence of the sea, and rare rains. The
grape harvest began in the second week of September with Vermentino, while the Ansonica grape harvest began
the second week of October. In conclusion, the 2024 harvest was later than in previous years, thanks in part to the lower temperatures in September, which allowed for a slow and progressive ripening of the grapes.
Tasting Notes
Gorgona 2024 is distinguished by a beautiful, bright and intense straw yellow color. The complex and elegant bouquet is
a blend of floral, fruity, and Mediterranean notes. The opening aromas recall broom and honeysuckle,
these notes are accompanied by those of ripe exotic fruit and citrus notes reminiscent of bergamot and citron.
It continues with sensations of rosemary, sage, and helichrysum. The finish is dominated by iodine notes. On the palate, it has a
beautiful savory character and a splendid freshness. The persistence and harmony between the nose and palate are remarkable. The finish is long.
