VINTAGE DESCRIBED BY FRANCESCO MONARI,
TECHNICAL DIRECTOR AND AGRONOMIST:
The winter was rather warm, but rainier than usual. The precipitation
enabled us to start with good water reserves. We saw a milder
than-usual March and a cooler April. The month of May, on the other hand, was in line with the
seasonal averages, but decidedly rainy, causing great difficulties in the usual
seasonal work and making Montalcino the rainiest place in Tuscany
at this time of year. The months of June and July were hot, with fairly
high temperatures, and high humidity caused sudden and fairly frequent thunderstorms. In
July and August, the situation reversed somewhat, returning to average; in the last
week of August, we were hit by a significant heat wave that
coupled with a sirocco wind. September and October were characterized by
above-average temperatures, which, however, allowed for perfect ripening.
Despite the seasonal atypicality, we managed to obtain quality grapes without any quantitative losses,
the ripening was surprisingly uniform and balanced.
