The vineyard
Pol Roger manages an exceptional 92-hectare Champagne vineyard, which includes some of the best plots of the Montagne de Reims and the Côte des Blancs.
The wine
"There is only one answer to defeat, and that is victory", Sir Winston Churchill, to whom we owe this quote, was particularly fond of the champagnes of the Maison Pol Roger, "the most delicious place in the world" according to him, to celebrate moments of glory and forget those of pain.
In 1975, Pol Roger decided to pay homage to this great man by creating the Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill. Made with Grands Crus of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, this exceptional champagne is only produced in exceptional years.
2015 is the 21st vintage of this cuvée.
The vintage
The particularly sunny winter of February and March was followed by warmer weather, which led to the buds appearing in mid-April. Flowering began in mid-June. From the end of May to the second half of August, the warm and dry climate ensured excellent ripening, before the periods of rain that preceded the harvest. The harvest takes place between September 2 and 18.
Vinification and aging
After harvesting, the grapes are gently pressed. An initial decantation is carried out in the pressing center, before a second decantation in the internal vat room, at a cold temperature (6°C) for 24 hours.
This is followed by low-temperature alcoholic fermentation (18°C) in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. Vinification is carried out separately by variety and vintage before final blending. Malolactic fermentation is then carried out. After blending and bottling, the wine is matured and left to boil in the estate's historic cellars.
Produced in limited quantities, Pol Roger's Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill 2015 is aged for 9 years. After disgorging, a further aging of at least 3 months is carried out before being released for sale.
Blend
Kept secret, the blend is composed of Pinot Noir, whose predominance gives it structure and robustness, and Chardonnay, a grape variety renowned for its elegance and finesse.
