In the county of Morayshire, in a forest located near the town of Elgin, a small distillery with a great past thrives, which has made the products of the Livet valley famous: the Linkwood Distillery.
Linkwood was built in 1821 on the initiative of Peter Brown and named after a small manor that once stood in that same place.
Already in 1835 its two stills, unusually much larger than normal, were able to produce up to 91,000 litres of a fine malt spirit in a year, already particularly appreciated by consumers of the time.
Just think that in 1839 Glenlivet produced exactly half!
For this reason in 1873 the founder's son decided to expand the building in anticipation of the purchase of new machinery.
In 1897 the company took the name Linkwood-Glenlivet Distillery Ltd.
A few years later its prestige grew further thanks to two people with notable professional skills.
The first was Innes Cameron, administrative director from 1902 to 1932.
Shortly afterwards the company was liquidated and finally purchased by DCL (Distillers Company Limited) in 1936.
In conjunction with this change of ownership, the figure of Roderick Mackenzie emerged, who managed the Linkwood Distillery for several years, holding the position of superintendent of distillation.
It is said that he observed the principle of never replacing the elements of the basic equipment unless absolutely necessary, fearing that the slightest change could cause alterations to the properties of the Whisky produced.
Mackenzie's originality went so far as to exaggerate the care given to each individual distillate to the point of superstition.
Legend has it that even the cobwebs inside the distillery were left intact in their place.
Between 1971 and 1973 the factory was expanded with the construction of a new distillery, next to the old premises, capable of four new stills.
In 1985 the pre-existing distillery was closed, waiting for market demands to justify reopening and restarting production.
This happened in 1990, with the reactivation of the two original stills.
We arrive at 2013, the year in which two new stills helped bring the distillation potential to 5,600,000 liters per year.
LINKWOOD SINGLE MALT SCOTCH WHISKY MOSAICS COLLECTION DISTILLED 2018 BOTTLED 2024 MOON IMPORT
The Mosaics Collection 2024, Pepi Mongiardino's latest effort, is made up of six different whiskies united by a thematic label; in this case they are reproductions of ancient mosaics.
In this case we present a Linkwood, from a single barrel n° 308361, bottled in 2024.
Only 278 bottles of 70 cl. produced at an alcohol content of 45% Vol.
The color is ancient gold; on the nose it develops intense and balanced aromas with clear herbaceous hints of green apple, hawthorn and chewing gum.
On the palate a sweet note of cereals and hay initially prevails, leaving room for a fruity and elegant outfit.
The long finish recalls a meadow of wild herbs on a base of barley malt.
