The Glen Garioch Distillery, now owned by Morrison Bowmore (Suntory group), is located in the village of Old Meldrum in Aberdeenshire, about 20 miles north of the city of Aberdeen.
Its origins date back to 1797.
The history of this distillery is dotted with numerous changes of ownership; we remember the J. F. Thomson & Co. of Leith and the William Sanderson & Sons Ltd., under which it became part of the DCL group.
All the owners who succeeded each other, never fully exploited the production capacity of Glen Garioch.
The main reason was to be found in the fact that the place was considered poorly satisfactory from the point of view of water resources and, for this reason, the distillery was closed in 1968.
In 1970 it was sold to Stanley P. Morrison Ltd.
This company was much luckier.
A well was dug in a field in front of the building and an abundance of water was found.
Distillation soon resumed and a new Pot Still was added in 1973.
Apart from the new still, the distillery remained largely unchanged over the years.
Even the malting process remained the same, so much so that the quantity produced was insufficient to cope with the level of production.
Peat was sourced nearby in the New Pistligo Moss bogs.
In 1973 production jumped from 140,000 to 500,000 gallons and it was at this time that Glen Garioch was bottled for the first time as a Single Malt.
The distillery’s history took a major step in 1994 when Suntory, who already controlled Morrison Bowmore, took over ownership.
The following year, 1995, the distillery was silenced starting in October.
This stoppage lasted just under two years, until, in August 1997, distillation resumed and has never stopped until today.
GLEN GARIOCH SINGLE MALT SCOTCH WHISKY MOSAICS COLLECTION DISTILLED 2013 BOTTLED 2024 MOON IMPORT
The Mosaics Collection 2024, Pepi Mongiardino's latest effort, is made up of six different Whiskies united by a thematic label; in this case they are reproductions of ancient mosaics.
In this case we present a Glen Garioch 2013, from a single cask no. 236, bottled in 2024.
Only 420 bottles of 70 cl. produced at an alcohol content of 45% Vol.
The color is amber; the nose develops delicate and soft aromas of vanilla, grapefruit, spices and heather.
Full-bodied on the palate, it is initially rather sweet but with a subsequent dry persistence. Hints of pink pepper and hazelnuts.
Intense and herbaceous the long finish.
