PRODUCT INFORMATION
Founded in 1994, Messorio is a personal challenge with one of the most widespread varieties in the Bolgheri area, on the Tuscan coast, and
around the world: Merlot. The idea, from the very beginning, was to transform the finest grapes into a wine of great impact and
personality, distancing itself as much as possible from the stereotype that would have it docile and predictable, but rather,
making it, on the contrary, a thoroughbred that never gives up its spirits. The name harks back to the harvest and harvesting period, a fundamental step in every agricultural activity.
MESSORIO | 2022
CLIMATE
The year began with temperatures slightly higher than the seasonal
average and little rain, factors that led to a late start to
pruning operations. Spring began with slightly lower
temperatures and a prolonged lack of significant rainfall. All this
caused extremely late budbreak (almost four weeks
compared to typical years), which began in the first ten days of April and continued
with slow bud growth until the last significant rainfall
at the beginning of May. From this point on, the lack of rainfall,
combined with a rapid increase in temperatures, led to a
rapid arrival of the flowering phase and subsequent fruit set. The rapid
succession of these two vegetative phases almost completely eliminated the month-long
delay during budbreak in spring. Veraison was
early, particularly for Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc, but also, to some extent,
for Merlot. The entire summer period was characterized by a
prolonged lack of rain, which affected berry size and led to
irregular ripening. This made it particularly difficult to
identify the exact harvest time for each variety, requiring
a greater number of samples and careful selection of parcels in order to
combine the most homogeneous areas. The 2022 harvest will certainly be remembered
for its duration. It began early with the Chardonnay on August 9th and
concluded, almost a month and a half later, on September 22nd with the Cabernet Sauvignon,
thanks to the arrival of rains and the drop in temperatures
starting in mid-August. The rains at this time of year
made a significant contribution to the vintage's recovery, allowing us to achieve
good yields and excellent ripening of all the red grapes.
