Born in 1994, Messorio is a personal challenge with one of the most widespread varieties in the Bolgheri area, on the Tuscan coast, and
around the world: Merlot. The idea, from the very beginning, was to transform the finest grapes into a wine of great impact and
personality, distancing itself as much as possible from the stereotype that would have it docile and predictable, but rather,
making it, on the contrary, a thoroughbred that never gives up its spirits. The name harks back to the harvest and harvesting period,
a fundamental step in every agricultural activity.
MESSORIO | 2016
CLIMATE
2016 was certainly one of the most consistent vintages of the last decade.
There were no extreme conditions from any point of view. We
had regular rainfall, which fell almost as if driven
by the vines' own needs: abundant in March, May, and June,
heavy at the end of July, and finally, a warm and
sunny August and mid-September. Temperatures were also optimal: a mild late winter
that had caused concern was then stabilized by a generally
cool spring,
which slowed the physiology and phenology of the plants,
which then benefited from a warm but not torrid summer, with significant temperature
ranges. Work in the vineyard focused on containing and managing the
canopy, with shoot removal and defoliation where necessary and with
widening the unpruned areas to benefit from a so-called "cropping" technique,
with the aim of allowing the plant to vent and avoiding excessive production of
shoots. The soil was worked several times with the aim of rebalancing
the heat-humidity ratio to facilitate flowering and fruit set. The growth of the
bunches was regular and optimal, with excellent yield and perfect
ripening.
