The 2023 vintage was marked by a relatively cold winter, which favored a slight delay in budbreak. Spring was characterized by above-average temperatures, allowing the initial delay to be made up for, promoting a flowering in line with the historical average. The summer months were generally hot and dry, marked by sporadic rainfall towards the end of August, ensuring perfect ripening and integrity of the berries. The harvest began in the second week of September with the Cabernet Franc, capable of giving the wine an elegant tannic structure, and continued a week later with the Cabernet Sauvignon, characterized by aromas of ripe black fruit, and concluded in early October with the Carménère, with grapes capable of providing complexity and spicy aromas. Vinification The grapes, carefully selected and hand-picked into crates, were then re-selected on sorting tables before destemming and gentle pressing. The pressed grapes were transferred by gravity into stainless steel conical tanks, where alcoholic fermentation took place at a controlled temperature of 28°C (82°F) and maceration, which lasted approximately 20 days. The wine was then transferred to barriques, where malolactic fermentation took place and the subsequent aging in French oak for 16 months. Historical Data Fattoria Le Mortelle is located in the heart of the Tuscan Maremma, a few kilometers from Castiglione della Pescaia, in an extraordinary and fascinating location both for its natural beauty and the history of the surrounding area. The Antinori family has always been present in these lands. In 1863, a property deed listed among the estate's holdings Poggio Franco, one of the estate's most suitable vineyards, along with other parcels of land. Since 1999, the family has worked on both the vineyards and the new winery, convinced that the area, still emerging in the Italian winemaking scene , is highly suited to the production of quality wines and that here the characteristics of the terroir and the cultivated varieties can best express themselves. The farm extends over 270 hectares, 170 of which are planted with vines of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, as well as more recent plantings of white grape varieties such as Vermentino, Ansonica, and Viognier, and a small amount of Carménère. The soil, medium-textured, sandy and silty, has a predominantly siliceous-clayey composition and is, in some areas, rich in gravel. Poggio alle Nane is born from a blend of the finest Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, and a small amount of Carménère grapes, with the unique terroir of the Poggio alle Nane vineyards, one of the company's most suitable areas, capable of producing grapes of extraordinary quality. A wine with great aromatic complexity and an elegant, dense tannin structure. Tasting Notes Poggio alle Nane 2023 is ruby ??red in color with purple highlights. On the nose, intense fruity notes of currant, blackberry, and red plum alternate with sweet hints of vanilla, icing sugar, and pleasant spicy and balsamic sensations of blond tobacco and eucalyptus. The entry is enveloping, supported by sweet and refined tannins that accompany a long, persistent finish characterized by notes of cocoa and myrtle.
