Gaja is an Italian wine producer from the Piedmont region since 1859 that belongs to the Distilleria Cooperativa del Barbaresco. Its current owner and president Angelo Gaja has invited development techniques that have revolutionized winemaking in Italy and is considered as “the undisputed king of Barbaresco”.
Darmagi Langhe is a red wine obtained from Cabernet Sauvignon grapes (with a small cut of Merlot and Cabernet Franc) from a vineyard planted by Angelo Gaja in 1978.
It was his father Giovanni who inadvertently gave the name to the wine who, at the time of planting when the Cabernet Sauvignon vines took the place of the Nebbiolo vines, exclaimed: “Darmagi!” (what a shame in dialect).
On the nose it offers persistent aromas of ripe fruit and spices. On the palate it is soft and aromatic, with an aftertaste of cocoa and tobacco. It ends in a finish of discrete persistence.
Try it on a leg of lamb or on venison morsels with polenta croutons.
