PRODUCT INFORMATION
A Premier Grand Cru Classé from Margaux, seductive in its delicacy and balance
The Estate
With origins dating back to the 12th century, Château Margaux is one of the Grands Crus that have shaped the legend of great Bordeaux wines throughout the world. In 1855, the château was elevated to the rank of Premier Grand Cru Classé and was the only one of the four châteaux presented to achieve a perfect score of twenty out of twenty. With the acquisition of the estate in 1977 by André Mentzelopoulos, Château Margaux began a new chapter in its history. Elevating the Grand Vin of Château Margaux to the highest level, she reintroduced the estate's second wine, Pavillon Rouge du Château Margaux, first created in 1908. Following in her father's footsteps after his untimely death, Corinne Mentzelopoulos took up the family reins with energy and passion to preserve the prestige of Château Margaux, which had become a Bordeaux masterpiece, instantly recognizable by its neo-Palladian silhouette. Vintage after vintage, the estate's wines rank among the world's greatest.
The Vineyard
The Château Margaux vineyard owes its distinctiveness to a rare and unique terroir, located on a gravelly hill. The estate's varietal profile is dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, alongside Merlot, Petit Verdot, and Cabernet Franc. The estate's clay-limestone soils give rise to legendary wines with the fine and sensual character so characteristic of the Margaux appellation.
The Wine
Grand Vin represents 36% of the harvest.
The Vintage
A cold and dry winter was followed by a cool and humid April that delayed bud break and slowed vegetative growth. Mild and warmer weather from May 1st favored rapid and uniform flowering. From July 10th until the end of the harvest (October 14th), a particularly dry period affected the plots unevenly. Despite these extreme conditions, the alternation of warm days and cool nights favored the development of tannins and aromatic complexity, preserving a splendid freshness. 2009 is considered one of the estate's great vintages.
Blend
Cabernet Sauvignon (87%)
Merlot (9%)
Cabernet Franc (2%)
Petit Verdot (2%)
Characteristics and tasting recommendations for Château Margaux 2009
Tasting
This 2009 vintage is the result of rigorous harvest selection. Only 36% of the grapes (31% at bottling) make up this estate's Grand Vin. Throughout the tasting, this refined and balanced vintage seduces with its concentration combined with superb freshness. While the density and tannic structure of this wine recall the 2005 vintage, its supple and silky texture harks back to 1990. The lingering finish harmoniously blends freshness and aromatic richness.
