PRODUCT INFORMATION
Giacomo Conterno has been producing wine since 1920, when he made it from grapes purchased from the finest vineyards in Serralunga d'Alba and Monforte d'Alba. Over the years, vineyards have been purchased, reaching the current 17 hectares, cultivated using integrated pest management techniques. The varieties grown are Nebbiolo and Barbera, both grown in the Cascina Francia and Ceretta vineyards. The cellar maintains a remarkable level of cleanliness and rigor; every barrel, every steel tank, and every piece of equipment is in perfect order, ready to interact to create magnificent wines renowned throughout the world, such as this Barolo Riserva, harvested in mid-October. Its initial fermentation takes place in 61-hectoliter truncated-cone oak vats, where the grapes undergo lengthy skin maceration, including submerged cap maceration, at temperatures as high as 32°C. After the first fermentation, the Monfortino is transferred to large wooden barrels, almost exclusively of Austrian origin, of varying sizes, where malolactic fermentation takes place and the wine matures for approximately 82 months.
The 3 Senses
The aromas of this Barolo emerge gradually, progressively, revealing a remarkable bouquet: they begin with beautiful ripe fruit, chocolate-flavored cherries in alcohol, plum, blackberry, notes of black olives and mushrooms, truffles, mixed hints of undergrowth, hints of sweet licorice, leather, and earth. On the palate, it is strong, rich, and tannic, but "sweetened" by the fruity aftertaste, followed by excellent mineral nuances. A wine that may provoke debate among traditionalists, but it undoubtedly possesses class and elegance. Pair it with well-seasoned dishes based on red meats and game. The excellent combination of softness and balance already allow it to be paired with jugged hare and pheasant.
