Vino Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG Riserva
Located in a historic area for the production of Vino Nobile di Montepulciano and considered one of the most suitable, Calimaia
sits on the rolling hills between the Val di Chiana and the Val d'Orcia. The vineyards, arranged around the estate's hill,
enjoy an altitude of 300 meters above sea level and vary in exposure and soil type, thus allowing
every grape variety grown to thrive.
Climate Trend
The 2019 climate trend was characterized by a warm winter, followed by a cool and rainy spring,
particularly in the months of April and May; bud break was slightly delayed compared to
previous seasons. The transition from spring to summer was unfortunate, with a rather
hot June and July. August, however, was not excessively hot. September temperatures were average, with
some rain concentrated in a few days. The vintage's climate favored the development of aromatic precursors
in grapes grown on sandy and yellow sandstone soils. The grapes harvested from the clay-rich vineyards reached full
polyphenol maturity, producing opulent wines with rich tannins.
Technical Notes
Variety: Sangiovese, locally known as Prugnolo Gentile, and complementary Baccarossa grape varieties
Alcohol Content: 14.5%
Aging: 36 months in oak barrels, 6 months in bottle
Vinification and Aging
The grapes were harvested by hand and carefully selected in the vineyard, after which they were vinified in
stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature of 26°C, with spontaneous fermentation. The
maceration on the skins lasted 20 days and allowed for perfect extraction of polyphenolic substances, aided by
frequent pumping over in the initial stages of fermentation, interrupted by a delestage in the intermediate phase, and then
gently resumed in the final phase. Malolactic fermentation was completed in stainless steel before winter.
Subsequently, the wine aged in 50-hl oak barrels for 36 months, followed by further bottle aging
for another 6 months.
Tasting Notes
Calimaia Nobile Riserva 2019 presents a brilliant ruby ??red color. The nose is intense and decisive, with a
bouquet dominated by notes of cherry, wild strawberry, and currant, intertwined with balsamic hints of aromatic
herbs such as sage and thyme. The spicy notes are very elegant, emerging with hints of pepper and
cloves combined with vanilla and coffee. The palate is voluminous and enveloping, with a tannic and overpowering note and
a captivating and decisive spiciness. A wine of great complexity and remarkable length and persistence on the palate.
